LOUK / Bettina Bolzer
The project LOUK grew out of the idea to investigate our usually stereotypical
approach towards the unknown and the different, something that is out
the range what we consider as normal.
Todays mix of cultures results in the common side by side existence
wjthout interest in each other’s lives. Louk stands for the stranger
in our societies and provokes curiosity because of her exotic nature.
Exactly this exciting difference lets us book most holiday destinations
promising to experience another culture, participating in foreign rituals
and indulging local foods. Why does that principle not apply at home
with our immigrated neighbor? Are we afraid of being overrun and assimilated
and on the other hand why is my neighbor in his guest country not interested
in my culture?
Seemingly the reception of the exotic difference depends on how much
you willingly pay for the experience and how appetizing it is advertised.
Since advertising and media coverage are some of the key elements in
generating opinions and influencing minds, why not use them in a constructive
way to evoke each others interest and support the strong aspects of
each culture. Symbiotic relationships are more satisfying than parasitic
ones in the long run. What comes after you have killed your host?
Regarding to Einstein -the fusion of two components is much more than
just adding them up.
I am interested in provoking a reaction that will have an influence
on the observer's day to day reality.
